Beautiful heavy broach-pin of finest quality and detail, commemorating the 550th year of Heidelberg University, one of Germany's landmark institutes for learning. Measuring a little over 1 1/2" tall, pin is of solid construction. A detailed silver engraved oval border surrounds the solid oval-shaped black enamel broach and illustration is accented in silver and white.
Both University professors and city officials (and other Heidelberg VIPs) were presented with this eye-catching piece of art. Everyone else had to settle for the hollow-stamped tinnie.
Having attended the university himself, Eisenhower personally appreciated the beauty, charm and history of the town and it was one of the few places inside Germany spared from daily bombing.

Pin shows some light surface rubbing on the center of the silver lion, but is otherwise very clean and bright, structurally sound about FN+ or better.
